Rocketeer Prop Helmet Project - Part 1

I recently purchased a Rocketeer replica prop helmet kit from Oz DeShaw. I have never delved into prop replica projects before, but seeing other people's completed buckets, I couldn't resist.

The helmet arrived very well protected and the first thing I noticed was how awesome it looked already. If I could only do it justice when it is completed, I'd be so happy.

Being the kid that I am, I had to see what it looked like with the fin. And luckily it fit like a glove right out of the box.

I started with the intimidating task of cleaning up the helmet. I removed the excess flash from the  neck and then moved on to the eye holes, mouth, and intakes. If I were to do it all again, I'd try things a bit differently - mainly getting a respirator sooner and changing out my sanding discs more often. After a few hours of work, this was the result.

A little more cleanup and sanding later and she was ready for primer. But not before I checked to see if it fit.

A coat of primer later and she is ready for the fin to be attached. I popped it on again, just because it looks so cool. Next step is getting the fin on there permanently and then she's ready for paint.

Stay tuned for Part 2 - The Paint Job. Of course, the lenses still need to be attached after that... another intimidating step. Wish me luck!
